Step into Conscious Creation and Create a Life You Love

People are remarkably adaptive. We learn early how to survive, while getting attention and love, the best ways we know how. From infancy, we absorb emotional patterns, beliefs, and behaviors from our parents, caretakers, teachers, and society.

Many of these patterns are helpful, but others are often limiting. They operate silently and unconsciously sabotage our happiness. Our brain’s unconscious programming shapes our decisions and emotional responses without our awareness or conscious consent.

It’s as if someone else is making life choices for us without our knowledge. So, if you want to learn to be a conscious creator, keep reading.

That’s right: much of what you think, feel, say, and do is automated and plays out unconsciously.

Mindfulness and conscious creation disrupt unconscious programming. By building greater self-awareness and taking deliberate action to transform our lives, we can intentionally create a life we love.

Learn how to hack into the personalized algorithm of your brain’s wiring and change it!

Let’s start at the beginning by understanding WHY we operate unconsciously so much of the time.

Why You've Been  Creating Unconsciously

Here’s the truth most of us were never taught: you’ve been creating your reality all along. For most of your life, your mind has been shaping your reality without you even realizing it.

This creation process isn’t mysticism—it’s how human cognition works.

Cognitive science and neuroscience consistently show that the majority of mental processing happens outside conscious awareness. Automatic patterns, cognitive priming, implicit beliefs, cognitive biases, and emotional imprints influence how we perceive, interpret, and derive meaning from our experiences. And impact how we respond to them.

Researchers at Stanford University noted that our mindsets—the stories we run internally fundamentally shape our health and behavior.

The brain’s automatic systems guide most of our behaviors. The neuroscience research shows that our brains can process information, make decisions, and regulate emotions below conscious awareness.

This automation happens because the brain is a predictive organ. It doesn’t process the world in real time. Instead, it filters and interprets our daily lives through long-standing mental models built from past experiences, cultural conditioning, and emotional memories.

These unconscious patterns determine WHAT you notice, HOW you feel about it, and the ACTIONS you take—or don’t take.

Quote by Helen Keller

Think of your subconscious as a quiet architect behind the scenes. However, this architect is churning out the same old blueprint designs repeatedly without considering your age, emotional maturity, goals, values, hopes, or dreams.

Every belief formed in childhood, every story you absorbed from culture, every unprocessed emotion is all part of the blueprint you’ve been using to build your life.

Your conscious mind might set goals (“I want a thriving career,” or “I want to have a healthy and happy relationship”), but your unconscious programs decide which doors you even notice, which people you befriend and marry, which opportunities feel safe, and even how much joy or struggle you allow yourself to experience.

And because these programs run silently, most people keep creating from old scripts—patterns that were never consciously chosen.

When I first stepped into this transformative work with clients, I identified one of the biggest obstacles to growth: most people are unconscious creators.

They’re shaping their reality—just not intentionally.

I’ll never forget when I was first married and said a reactionary comment to my husband; it was the exact thing my mom used to say to my dad.

Ugh.

I immediately followed it up with “Cancel that—my mother was talking!”

This distinction and awareness helped me sort and weed through what I truly felt and believed instead of what was passed on to me through unconscious programming.

Getting  Unconscious Programming to Work for You, Not Against You

Let me take you on a little tangent for a moment from a different angle. If you’d like to skip this section and go right to the steps of conscious creation, click here.

We recently watched an Apple TV series called Dark Matter with a fascinating storyline about multi-universes. This science fiction series explores how different decisions lead to divergent paths and how individuals grapple with the consequences of their choices across multiple realities.

In the movie, the characters had to master their thoughts and emotions to create a welcoming environment before they stepped into one of the many universes.

If you think about it, that is what we are doing every day.

Our thoughts, emotions, and actions are creating a welcoming OR unwelcoming environment for us—first inside of us, and then in our lives through our relationships, work, and lifestyle.

Here’s a profound truth that I’ve learned over the past two decades of coaching: We are each creating our reality hundred percent of the time—knowingly or unknowingly.

It’s the way I believe the universe works. It’s what quantum mechanics substantiates, as well.

So, if you’ve felt like life is happening TO you, it’s time to realize: life is happening BECAUSE OF YOU. And when you accept this new mindset, you gain the power to become the deliberate creator of your world.

I get it! It's a HUGE mind shift in thinking, isn’t it!?

I’ve been utilizing this knowledge for decades, and the principles still blow my mind. But, until you learn to create consciously, you’re at the mercy of automated, unconscious programs.

Stop attracting what you don’t want, and start creating what you DO want to manifest your dreams.

A Practical Practice of Conscious Creation

You can begin with this step-by-step process to get started.

For every new skill we learn, there are practices or ways to understand and apply an abstract concept. Here’s a simple formula you can use to gain greater self-awareness and begin to be a conscious creator.

Empathy Creates Psychological SafetyStart a practice to increase your self-awareness.

The first step in all change and personal growth is greater self-awareness. You can’t change anything if you don’t know what to change.

With that in mind, begin with your thoughts.

Observe them.

Yes, it takes discipline to monitor thoughts, but it’s totally worth it!

What do you regularly say to yourself?

Do you say things like “What a stupid thing to do!” or “I can’t believe I did that!” (or worse) throughout your day?

If so, try replacing each thought with a more positive one, such as, “How can I support myself to be more accurate in the future?” or “Next time, I’m going to pause and breathe before I react.”

If your inner critic is badgering you, write down what your mind tells you and rewrite the script. Then, when your mind throws a particular line at you, you're ready with a new replacement.

Each time you consciously choose what you say to yourself, you're seeding your unconscious—and a new future!

STEP 2 of Conscious Creation - Get clear on what you want..Get clear on what you want.

Give some serious thought to the life you’d like to create. Decide what you want—really want—and what parts of your life you like and dislike. What do you want more of, and what do you want less of?

You get to design your life!

It’s helpful to begin with only one area of your life, but some people prefer a big vision of all areas, then zero in on one. Either way will work. However, when you do start the work, pick only one aspect to focus on to build healthier habits. (Trying to change too much, too fast, typically ends with discouragement and is unsustainable.)

Start small, but START!

STEP 3 of Conscious Creation - Create a personal guide for your desired changes.Create a personal guide for your desired changes.

Write down the thoughts, feelings, and actions that align with your goal or what changes you desire.

Be specific. The more specific you document, the more difficult it is to ignore. Saying “I’m going to exercise every day” is very different from “I’ll get up an hour earlier Monday through Friday to do 15 minutes of stretching and yoga, then walk a mile.”

Or “I’m going to practice better self-care” is too general and most likely will be ineffective. Try this one on:

“Each day I begin the day with a positive intention. I choose to eat healthy food and get regular exercise. Throughout the day, I check in with myself and how I feel, listening to my emotional wisdom. I take actions that bring me joy and align with my true self."

You can even create a schedule to incorporate these new ways of being.

For instance, I link new actions I want to take with activities that are already automated, such as doing squats and push-ups while waiting for water to boil in the morning for tea.

Ask these questions continually to refine your process.

  • What thoughts, feelings, and actions represent my future best self?
  • What can I do to align myself better with my highest desires and the life I want to create?

Following the guide you create with this step-by-step process will point you in the right direction.

STEP 4 of Conscious Creation - Align your thoughts, feelings, and actions with what you want.

Align your thoughts, emotions, and actions with what you want.

What we think, feel, and do have power.

If we say we want to be financially secure but we ignore our spending and rack up credit card debt, we are contradicting ourselves.

Or if you’d like to lose weight and get in top physical shape, your thoughts, feelings, and actions need to support that goal. If you exercise for two days vigorously and then quit, you won’t achieve the fitness you’d like. Or if you eat junk food nightly and then feel really guilty afterward, nothing will change.

There is no alignment. And chances are, your habits represent your old, unconscious self. This lack of alignment is one of the reasons why the Law of Attraction doesn't work. One of the keys to manifestation is alignment!

However, when our thoughts, feelings, and actions align, we achieve what we want much quicker.

STEP 5 of Conscious Creation - Reflect and adjust with compassion.Reflect and adjust your actions with compassion.

Regularly review how you’re doing. What we pay attention to and measure, we can change more effectively.

Get curious, but be compassionate with yourself; no judgment, just reflect and adjust.

Here are some possible questions to ask yourself:

  • What gets in the way of following through on my goal?

  • Is there a legitimate need competing for my attention? If so, meet that need. (For instance, you’re short on sleep and tired, but you’re trying to convince yourself to go to the gym. Take a nap, then go to the gym.)

  • Are there slight shifts for the better? Celebrate them!

  • Has my joy increased? Do I feel better about myself? If so, why? (Do more of the activities that bring you joy!)

  • Have my actions this past week represented my old self and limiting beliefs or the new version of my best self?

This self-reflection creates a feedback loop that strengthens conscious living and boosts continuous personal growth.

Then, just press reset.

Closing Thoughts

Through greater self-awareness, reflection, and deliberate action, you will step into conscious creation.

Choose the behaviors that align with your true self. Intentional actions will positively shape your future.

Until you deliberately rewire unconscious programs, you’ll keep creating from them. Becoming aware is the first step to shifting from unconscious creation to conscious authorship of your life.

We are building, block by block, the quality of our lives.

If we’re creating the quality of our life every day, shouldn’t we be active participants?

A resounding “Yes!” to creating and living your best life!
