Break Bad Habits by Rewiring Your Brain

Our brains have about a hundred billion neurons with neuropathways longer than the earth's distance to the moon. That's a lot of pathways needing construction if we want to break bad habits!

Recently, road construction sparked a greater awareness of how our brain's neural pathways work. I was driving home across the Bozeman Pass on Interstate 90, and there was a string of construction signs for several miles. Initially, the signs signaled to reduce speed to 55. Next, the right lane would be closed in a half-mile; then, another speed reduction. All of the cars in front of me obediently [...]

Men and Empathy—Are They a Lost Cause?

Empathy and Men vs. Women: A Common Scenario

Recently, a couple came in for marriage coaching because they were stuck in a rut. Whenever she was upset about something, she would seek emotional support from him. Instead of empathy or even reflective listening, he would cut her off and suggest a bevy of ways to solve her problem. She would get more upset as a result because she didn’t feel understood. “Why can’t you just be there for me?” she’d ask.

In our session together, he explained that he felt like he would be validating her “unproductive” behavior (i.e., being emotional without taking [...]

How to Get Motivated: Intrinsic vs Extrinsic Motivation

Do you know what motivates you? Does it ever seem like some people are more motivated than others? And what's the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation anyway?

Whether you're trying to motivate yourself to write a term paper, to lose weight, or you're an employer endeavoring to motivate an employee, it's critical knowing what turns on the green light in the brain. And motivation is unique depending on temperament, values, past experience, and goals.

I'm so emotional!  Is something wrong with me?

Emotions can inadvertently run our lives, can't they?

Does worry keep you awake at night? Do you ever say to yourself, "Why am I so emotional?" You even confess to your friends, "I'm very emotional. I don't know what's wrong with me." Or does your partner say to you, "Stop being so emotional!" or "Why do you have to be so sensitive?"

Common things I hear in coaching. Without emotional intelligence and emotional regulation, we can feel like we're traveling on a runaway train. And driving that train is usually an inner critic.

Treat Mom on Mother's Day with Essential Oils

One of my favorite daily comforts and joys are essential oils. They are natural and healthy while also filling a room with nature's most magnificent fragrances. Many essential oils are also medicinal and have antiviral properties so they are a perfect gift for Mother's Day this year.

Aromatherapy and the natural remedies that support holistic health are a huge benefit to whoever you are giving to! We hope you enjoy how we've gathered our favorite oils for you.

Now, it's possible to give a bouquet in a bottle!

Practicing Gratitude in a Time of Uncertainty and Unrest

In times of uncertainty, we can grasp at straws and seek to chase the illusion of control but the truth is, it's impossible. Change is the only constant. However, there are things that we can control in these times of uncertainty and increased anxiousness.

The first and biggest one is our response. We can choose to quiet our fearful thoughts and emotions. This act alone may seem small, yet it can help us calm, assist us in making better decisions, and support us emotionally to weather the storm.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: Show Me How to Radically Improve My Life

Have you ever been in a situation where another person's behavior really set you off? Perhaps your co-worker took credit for one of your ideas, or your spouse talked over you and quickly dismissed your feelings, or maybe a good friend betrayed your confidence. You can’t contain your emotional reaction and feel justified in lashing out because of what someone else did.

Life appears to happen to us. It’s easy to feel like our quality of life is determined by things out of our control. But what if that's not true? What if the things that happen to us, and how we react to them, are simply a [...]

Why People Pleasers Desperately Need Healthy Boundaries

People-pleasing is a way of life for many. Yet, a happy life depends on healthy boundaries and being true to ourselves. One of the greatest skills anyone can learn is how to set healthy boundaries but for a people pleaser, the thought of setting a boundary can be scary and feel threatening.

A few months ago, a new client told me that she had a bad habit of saying “yes” when she really wanted to say “no.” At the end of the day, she felt exhausted and resentful because there was never any energy or time left over for what was important to her. Even when she was maxed to the hilt, she'd take on [...]
