And that’s to be expected. You’re not doing it wrong; combining families brings a lot of love and complexity. Everyone comes with their own history, hurts, habits, and hopes.

The stepparent’s primary job is to develop a loving relationship with their stepchildren and to connect as much as possible in positive ways.

Clearly define expectations around mealtimes, discipline, chores, tech use. Remember, everyone is going through a major transition, so designing a flexible and reasonable structure will stabilize the added complexity and increase a sense of security. Healthy boundaries ease tension and confusion.
